The Carolina Hurricanes regained control of the Eastern Conference Finals after another thrilling overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens.

Andrei Svechnikov provided the overtime winner as he scored at 14:06 for Carolina to defeat the Montreal Canadiens by 3-2 at Bell Centre on Monday. With the victory, the Carolina Hurricanes now trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven playoff series.

Svechnikov’s OT goal followed a pass by Seth Jarvis who set him up from the right circle. While Sebastian Aho screened the goalkeeper, Svechnikov shot past Dobeš to provide Carolina Hurricanes their second consecutive overtime win in the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Carolina Strikes Twice in the First Period

The Hurricanes were quick off the blocks after taking the opening lead through Shayne Gostisbehere. The Hurricanes continued the good start after the Canadiens drew level through Mike Matheson. Carolina then took control of the game once Taylor Hall scored for them towards the end of the first period.

In the early minutes, the Hurricanes dominated play and created plenty of chances against Montreal’s defense. They held an overwhelming advantage on the scoresheet in terms of shots after dominating the opening period of the game.

Canadiens Level Through Lane Hutson

With the scoreline at 2-1 in Carolina’s favor, Montreal finally scored a goal of their own during the second period through Lane Hutson. The goal ended a good penalty kill record for Carolina in the playoffs since they pulled off a power-play goal through Hutson’s strike.

Both teams had multiple opportunities to score during the remaining periods. Carolina remained dominant on the scoreboard while Dobeš helped keep the Canadiens in the match by making several big saves, including a save from Svechnikov on an odd-man rush.

Goal Disallowed for Offside

Despite coming close to taking the lead in the third period, the Canadiens had to settle for a draw after Carolina successfully challenged for offside which ruled out the Canadiens’ goal.

As a result, the game went into overtime where Andrei Svechnikov eventually scored for Carolina.

Hurricanes Perform Better When It Counts

Once again, the Carolina stars showed class when it counted most as Jarvis created the winning chance, Aho screened Dobeš and Svechnikov buried his shot to give the visitors an invaluable road win.

The Carolina Hurricanes have now won all their five overtime games during the 2026 postseason, proving that they are able to perform under pressure.

Montreal Canadiens had been dominant for parts of the match but unfortunately failed to capitalize on their many scoring chances to snatch a vital away win in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Implications of the Result

After trailing 1-0 in the series, the Hurricanes are now back in front thanks to their second consecutive overtime victory. Carolina is just one win away from booking a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals following their latest success.

For the Canadiens, losing another game is a major setback and puts them under pressure heading into Game 4. They will need more scoring opportunities next time if they hope to salvage the game.
