Morocco Captain Hakimi Urges Fans to End Whistling Amid AFCON Campaign

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has urged supporters to rally behind the national team after sections of the home crowd whistled during recent matches at the Africa Cup of Nations, saying the reaction risks undermining the players at a critical stage of the tournament.

The appeal came ahead of Morocco’s final Group A match against Zambia, with the hosts seeking to secure top spot and a favourable path into the knockout rounds.

“We need support, not whistles,” Hakimi said. “Playing at home should give us strength. The team feels it when the crowd is with us.”

Morocco opened their AFCON campaign with a win over Comoros before being held to a draw by Mali, a result that drew audible frustration from fans in the stadium. The draw ended Morocco’s long winning streak and increased pressure on coach Walid Regragui and his squad despite their strong overall form.

Hakimi, who has been managing a minor fitness issue, is expected to be available for selection against Zambia. Regragui confirmed the defender’s condition has improved, crediting coordination with his club, Paris Saint-Germain, during his recovery.

The Atlas Lions remain well positioned to advance from the group but must avoid defeat to guarantee first place. Finishing top would likely ease their route through the knockout phase as Morocco continue their bid for a first Africa Cup title since 1976.

With expectations high and home advantage firmly in place, Hakimi said the team’s focus remains on unity as the tournament enters its decisive phase.

“We are playing for the country,” he said. “When we stand together, we are stronger.”
