Mississippi defeated Georgia 39 to 34 in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. The game took place on Thursday night. The Rebels entered as the No. 6 seed, while Georgia held the No. 3 seed.
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss led Mississippi. He threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns. He also made plays under pressure and converted crucial fourth downs. Harrison Wallace III recorded nine receptions for 156 yards and one touchdown. De’Zhaun Stribling added seven catches for 122 yards. Kewan Lacy rushed for 98 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Lucas Carneiro kicked the game-winning 47-yard field goal with six seconds left. He also made field goals of 55 and 56 yards earlier in the game. Mississippi added a safety on the final kickoff after a Georgia lateral hit the pylon with one second remaining.
Georgia led 21 to 12 at halftime. Mississippi took the lead 34 to 24 early in the fourth quarter. Georgia tied the game with 55 seconds left after a touchdown pass from Gunner Stockton to Zachariah Branch and a short field goal by Peyton Woodring.
Chambliss set up the winning kick with a 40-yard completion to Stribling. Mississippi outgained Georgia 473 yards to 343. Stockton passed for 203 yards, threw one touchdown, and ran for two scores.
Mississippi improved to 13 and 1. The team advanced to face Miami in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl. Georgia finished the season 12 and 2.
